Two Class 6A teams handed the Stephenville Honeybees losses Thursday on the opening day of the Ector County Invitational softball tournament in Odessa.
Coach Rus Mayes’ Honeybees lost a 6-3 decision to Odessa High in their first game. Odessa Permian then shut out SHS in the second game of the day, 7-0.
Madison Gilder recorded two of Stephenville’s four hits in the loss to OHS. Gilder and Samantha Luna each were credited with one run batted in.
SHS pitcher Julia Flores worked all seven innings in that game, allowing eight hits and striking out four while taking the loss.
Three errors were committed by the Honeybees.
Flores was coming off a sterling effort in the Honeybees’ District 8-4A opener on Monday, when she pitched three hitless innings in a 15-0 win over Waxahachie Life in a game shortened by the mercy rule.
OHS scored one in the first inning before the Honeybees took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. But the Lady Bronchos went ahead to stay with two runs in the bottom of the third, before adding two in the fifth and one in the sixth. SHS picked up its other run in the top of the seventh.
In the loss to Permian, Flores had three of the five hits to boost the Honeybees on offense, but the Lady Panthers proved too much with 10 hits of their own.
Permian scored one in the second inning, then added three in the third and again in the fifth. Flores got the loss, pitching the first five frames.
