The Stephenville High School powerlifting team already had seven girls who had qualified last week to advance to the regional level, and on Monday it was learned that Issic De La Cruz had made it from the boys team.

De La Cruz is in the 198-pound class, and he had placed fourth in his division at the recent Stephenville Invitational.

The SHS girls regional qualifiers are Cheney Carrillo, Marianna Reyes, Mallory Gunter, Jessica Ebeling, Aubreyanna Ziegler and Norma Hernandez.

The girls regional meet will be held Saturday in Temple. The boys regional meet is scheduled March 10 in Smithville.

SHS powerlifting coach Eric Rivas said that De La Cruz will enter the regional competition with the fifth-best lift total, and he thinks he has a great chance to earn a medal.

“We think he still has more to go on his squat and possibly deadlift, that could bump him up another place,” Rivas said. “He’s a great kid, hard worker and will do whatever is asked of him.”
