Tarleton head coach Lonn Reisman moved within one win of career victory No. 650 as his Texans go 9-12 at the free throw line in overtime to cap off a 78-72 triumph Thursday night.
The Javelinas came out swinging to the tune of a 10-2 run over the opening three minutes before Deshawn Riddick got things started with the first of his 24 points on the night. Riddick would go on to lead the Texans with 22 points on 6-10 shooting from the floor, 4-6 from downtown, and 8-10 at the free throw line.
Riddick's jumper started a 21-13 Tarleton run over the next 12 minutes to bring the game to its first tie at 23-23 with 5:46 left in the opening half. Riddick's 13th points of the run gave the Texans their first lead of the night at 26-23. Tarleton carried that lead the rest of the way as the purple and white ended the half on an 11-4 surge to take a 37-27 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Tarleton pushed its lead to as many as 14 at 50-36 with 12:38 left in the game but Kingsville answered with a run. The Javelinas used a 21-7 run over the next eight minutes to tie the game once again at 57-57 with four minutes left.
Tarleton got one field goal and went 10-10 at the charity stripe in the final four minutes, but Kingsville had a prayer answered with a desperation three with one second on the clock to force overtime. The Texan defense answered the call in the extra period as Tarleton held Kingsville to just five points while nine free throws and a Nosa Ebomwonyi tip-in was enough to push Tarleton into the win column.
Behind Riddick's team-leading 24 points, Corinthian Ramseyscored 19 points and dished out six assists while Josh Hawleyscored 15 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and had three blocks, including a chase-down block of a fast break with 25 seconds to keep the Texans up by two in regulation.
Jaraan Lands and Preston Enloe each scored five while Jesse Hill(4), Sam Marshall (3), Ebomwonyi (2), and Clashon Gaffney (1) rounded out the scoring for Tarleton. The Texans shot .471 from the floor and from downtown while putting up an .884 mark at the free throw line.
Tarleton will look to deliver the 650th win of Lonn Reisman's career on Saturday with a 4 p.m. showdown against Angelo State.
