CANYON - Tarleton pulled off its biggest win of the season by taking down No. 8 West Texas A&M, 66-64, at the First United Bank Center.
"It was a heck of a ballgame and that's what it's always going to be with us and WT," said head coach Misty Wilson after the game. "It's a great college game and atmosphere. It's two teams competing and doing everything they need to for a win."
It's the first win in Canyon for the TexAnns since Jan. 26, 2011 where they won 64-43. The win also snaps WT's 16-game home winning streak, dating back to last season and is the first loss at home for the Lady Buffs of the season.
Mackenzie Hailey led the TexAnns with 19 points and McKinley Bostad added 14 points. The duo had the final four points that gave the TexAnns the win. Trailing 64-62 with 1:06 left, Hailey rebounded her own miss and finished with a jumper in the paint to tie the game at 64. On the ensuing possession, Bostad grabbed the defensive board and was fouled in the process. Bostad sank both free throws for the game's final points.
Tarleton (11-6, 5-4) led for 25 of the 40 minutes and it was a game-changing 21-0 run through the first and second quarters that gave the TexAnns the momentum throughout.
WT led 20-15 with 3:42 left in the first quarter and Tiara Tatum's 3-pointer on the other end began the run. Not only were the TexAnns scoring, but they were forcing turnovers. The TexAnns forced WT into 18 first-half turnovers that turned into 20 points. The TexAnns closed the first quarter on an 11-0 run to lead 26-20.
Tarleton opened the second quarter with 10 straight points to build its largest lead of the game at 36-20. The 21-0 run lasted from 3:05remaining in the first quarter until 5:54 left in the second half - over seven minutes of game action.
WT, however, countered with a 10-0 run of its own in the second quarter to bring the game to within 36-30. Tarleton led 42-35 at the break after shooting a scorching 60 percent in the first half, including going 5-of-8 on 3-pointers and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Tiara Tatum scored all 10 of her points in the first half to led the TexAnns at the break.
WT would outscore the TexAnns 20-16 in the third quarter, but the TexAnns still maintained their lead throughout the frame.
The Lady Buffs took their first lead since the first quarter at 59-58 with 7:57 left in the game, but the TexAnns were backing down. Bostad scored the next four points to regain the lead at 62-61. The teams would go scoreless over the next three minutes of play, setting up Hailey and Bostad to close the game out and steal a road conference win.
The TexAnns finished the game shooting 46 percent from the floor and forced WT into 27 turnovers that translated into 25 points.
Kylie Collins scored nine points - all on 3-pointers - and added four assists. Katie Webster scored six points.
