The Stephenville Yellow Jackets closed out the first half of their District 8-4A boys basketball schedule Wednesday with a 71-36 loss to state-ranked Waxahachie Life School on the road.
Coach Bill Brooks’ Jackets are in third place with a 4-2 mark in district and 11-16 for the season. Life, the No. 14 team in the current Texas Association of Basketball Coaches state rankings, is second with a 4-1 record, and is 24-6 overall.
The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but was changed to Wednesday because of wintry weather problems in the area.
The leading scorer in the game for SHS was Skylar Stilwell, with 8 points. Next were Braden Hayes and Cody Storrs, with 7 points each, and Mason Holstein and Mason Castleberry with 6 apiece.
The Mustangs enjoyed a height advantage, having three players who stand at least 6-6. They used that edge to notch a 38-15 edge in rebounding.
The Jackets finished with 24 turnovers, and the Mustangs came up with 18 steals.
Life was leading 34-25 at halftime, but outscored the Jackets 14-5 in the third quarter and 23-6 in the final period.
“It was close at the half,” Brooks said. “We played a good half of basketball. We were shooting the ball well and playing good defense. They put some pressure on us (in the second half) and caused some turnovers.
“Our effort was good. We’re 4-2 (in district). We’re sitting pretty good right now. We’re playing well. Our two losses are to two of the top teams in the state (Life and No. 11 Midlothian Heritage). We’re looking forward to the second half of district.”
The SHS boys and girls have their open date this weekend, but will resume district play Tuesday at home against Glen Rose.
