DENTON - Tarleton got 52 combined points from McKinley Bostad, Mackenzie Hailey, and Katie Webster, led by a career-high 24 points from Bostad, in a 71-67 comeback victory over Texas Woman's at Kitty Magee Arena Thursday afternoon.
It's Tarleton's first win over Texas Woman's at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton since December 1, 2012. It's also the first time since that day that the TexAnns have shot over .400 from the floor as Tarleton went an even .400 from the floor and were .500 shooting from downtown on 8-16 shots from downtown. Tarleton was also 15-19 at the free throw line for a .789 shooting clip.
Kylie Collins got the TexAnns on the board with the team's first six points of the game, opening 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. That would be all the offense Tarleton would get over the opening 6:30, however, as Texas Woman's started the game on a 13-6 run.
Tarleton went into the second quarter trailing by eight at 19-11 and would cut into the Pioneer lead throughout the final 10 minutes of the half. The TexAnns pulled within four on three different occasions, including as late as the final 30 seconds, but a Texas Woman's layup sent Tarleton into halftime with a six-point deficit at 34-28.
After Texas Woman's scored first in the new half, Collins got the Tarleton offense started again as her first points of the third quarter started a 14-8 Tarleton run over the next seven minutes while the TexAnns pulled within a single basket at 44-42 with 1:33 left in the quarter. The Pioneers pushed their lead back to four with the final points of the quarter to send the game to the fourth quarter at 46-42.
In the fourth quarter, however, Tarleton finally broke through.
Katie Webster started things off with an and-one conversion to pull within one at 46-58. That one-point lead carried down to the 7:35mark when Mackenzie Hailey cleaned up an offensive rebound and put it back in for the TexAnns' first lead since the first quarter. On Tarleton's next offensive possession, another offensive rebound led to more scoring as McKinley Bostad cleaned up the glass and found Makaila Tyer for three and a 52-48 Tarleton lead.
The Hailey putback started a 10-2 run over three minutes to push the Tarleton lead out to 57-50. The Pioneers cut the Tarleton lead to two inside the final minute, but Tarleton went 4-6 at the free throw line to seal the game.
Bostad poured in a career-best 24 points on 7-13 shooting from the floor, including a 4-5 mark from downtown, and 6-8 at the charity stripe. In addition to her scoring, Bostad filled up the stat sheet with eight blocks, five steals, three assists, and a block.
She wasn't the only TexAnn feeling it from the floor as Mackenzie Hailey scored 16 points on 6-14 shooting to go along with nine rebounds, four steals, a block, and an assist. Katie Webster also cracked double digits with 12 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Collins (8) and Tiara Tatum (6) combined for 14 points to round out the starting five while Tyer (3) and Nina Alvarez (2) rounded out the team scoring for the TexAnns.
Tarleton will have a week off before returning to action on the road as the TexAnns visit No. 2 West Texas A&M next Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the First United Bank Center in Canyon.
