The state’s 12th-ranked Class 4A boys basketball team performed as advertised Friday night when the Stephenville Yellow Jackets came calling in a District 8-4A contest in Midlothian.

The Jackets were defeated by a 74-41 count by the Heritage Jaguars (19-6 overall, 3-0 in district), who were state semifinalists last season.

It was the first district loss for Stephenville (2-1 in district, 9-15 overall).

The Jackets got a team-high 13 points from Cody Storrs. Teammate Braden Hayes added 8 points and 5 rebounds for the Jackets, and Clay Krause scored 7 points.

The Jaguars out-rebounded the Jackets 33-19 overall, and shot 50 percent from the field overall. Heritage stole the ball 11 times, and committed only 3 turnovers.

“We knew going in it was not going to be (an) easy game since they are one of the top teams in the state,” SHS head coach Bill Brooks. “The guys got after it and held their best player who averages 21 (points per game) to only 11.”

Heritage led 21-9 at the end of the opening quarter, and 45-21 at intermission. The Jaguars outscored Stephenville 13-10 in the third quarter and 16-10 in the fourth.

The Jackets continue district play Tuesday at home against Alvarado. Their next game will be Friday at Godley (varsity at 7:30 p.m.).
