The Stephenville High School football team suffered its second loss in a row in a 20-17 homecoming setback against Lubbock Monterey at Memorial Stadium.
Stephenville was playing without starting running back Krece Nowak, the team's leading rusher and scorer, because of a rib injury suffered last week. The Jackets saw two receivers leave the game with injuries - Clay Krause with a knee injury early in the game, and Kyle Lindsey late in the game.
Stephenviille led the Plainsmen (2-3) 10-3 at halftime on a 1-yard touchdown run by Blu Caylor and a 40-yard field goal by Chase Carrillo.
Caylor's second TD, also from a yard out, gave the Jackets a 17-10 lead in the third quarter, but Monterey rallied for a field goal and a TD run in the fourth quarter for the winning margin.
SHS quarterback Easton Jones threw for 229 yards, completing 18 of 29 passes with no interceptions. Gage Graham led the Jackets in receiving with nine catches for 144 yards.
The Jackets, now 4-2 on the season after their final non-district contest, have their open date next week. They will begin District 3-4A, Div. I play at rival Brownwood on Friday, Oct. 20 (7:30 p.m.).
