High school volleyball teams rarely see a two-match stretch tougher than the one the Stephenville Honeybees experienced in their latest District 8-4A battles.
On Sept. 19, the Honeybees tangled with the third-ranked team in Class 4A, and came out of the short end of a 25-10, 36-34, 25-10 decision at home.
Veteran SHS head coach Fran Metzger said that the 70-point marathon was likely the longest of any set in her coaching career.
Then on Friday the Honeybees traveled to Glen Rose to take on the state’s No. 1 team the Texas Girls Coaches Association rankings. The Lady Tigers extended their school-record win streak (35 wins without a loss this season) in defeating the Honeybees, 25-15, 25-20, 26-24.
The Honeybees began district play by winning their first two matches, but are now 2-2, and 14-19 on the season.
“I am proud of the girls’ performance during the second game,” Metzger said of the Heritage contest. “We did have set point at times and so did they.”
Against Heritage, Jayci Morton and Salette Rios led SHS in kills with seven and six, respectively.
Hailey Martin had a team-leading 13 digs for the Honeybees, while teammates Hannah Huckabee and Gabie Lucero added nine and eight, respectively.
In the Glen Rose match, the Honeybees were led in kills by Jayci Morton with five, and Ashton Garner and Chloe Goodman had four each.
Also for the Honeybees in that match, Hailey Martin led in digs with 14 and Hannah Huckabee recorded nine.
The Honeybees are scheduled to continue league play tonight with a home district match against Venus.
