Two Stephenville High School athletes were named this week as honorable mention selections on the Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 4A all-state baseball team for the 2017 season.
Easton Jones, who is about to enter his senior year at SHS, and incoming junior Cody Storrs were named to the annual TSWA team — which is chosen by vote of coaches and sports writers — after helping lead the Yellow Jackets to the third round of the playoffs in May.
Jones, a pitcher, and Storrs, Stephenville’s catcher, both earned special team recognition after the Yellow Jackets were eliminated from the playoffs by district champion Godley.
Jones was named as the Pitcher of the Year by both the district and the team, and Storrs was chosen as the team’s Most Valuable Player on offense.
Storrs led the Yellow Jackets in hitting on the season, including a .376 batting average in district play.
Jones crafted a 4-2 record pitching in district, and led the team in several categories overall. In district play, Jones gave up just 4 earned runs in 32 innings pitched against district foes, and walked only 12.
“With Cody leading us in batting average and on-base percentage, and Easton leadubg us in strikeouts and wins, they were big keys to our success,” said SHS head baseball coach Justin Swenson, who guided the team to a 23-9-2 season mark and a playoff berth as the fourth-place team in the district. “There are not two players who are more deserving. Their efforts paid off, and it’s well-deserved. We were lucky to have those two players.”
