The Stephenville Sox baseball organization is hosting its annual “On the Bosque” baseball tournament in Stephenville April 1-2 and Keith Philips — one of the organizers of the tournament and Stephenville Sox 14U coach — says it could bring as many as 1,800-2,000 visitors to the area.

Jeremy Allen, deputy city administrator, said, “The Stephenville Sox do such a great job promoting their tournament and the city of Stephenville.  In a short period of time over just a few years they have made their tournament one that teams look forward to coming to.”

The Sox organization hosted its first tournament in Stephenville in the spring of 2011 that had six teams entered to play, and it has grown exponentially every year since.

“Last spring the tournament brought in 35 teams and this season it will be much larger. There are currently 50 baseball teams entered in this year’s tournament in the 9U-14U age divisions,” Philips said.

“Teams from Dallas, Waco, San Angelo, Abilene, Sweetwater, Wichita Falls and everywhere in between will be playing in this baseball tournament. This event is a big win for everyone in our area."

Philips said they want to get the information out so local businesses can prepare to serve the incoming customers.

Games will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 1, and run through Saturday night until 10 p.m.

Sunday games will again begin at 8 a.m. where each age division will play a single-elimination style tournament with champions and finalists to be determined at the end of the day.

Champions and finalists will receive rings.

“The Stephenville Sox baseball organization plays baseball tournaments throughout the spring and has met a lot of coaches, teams and organizations since beginning in the Fall of 2009,” Philips explains.

He said they have had some successful teams throughout the years winning qualifying and state tournaments and becoming finalists in the 2012 Super Series World Series in the majors division.

“The Sox organization currently has 74 players that will compete on seven different teams all around the state of Texas. All the Stephenville Sox baseball teams are made up from players in Stephenville and surrounding communities," Philips said. “Our organization has been blessed with great parents, players and coaches throughout the years. Hosting a tournament here in Stephenville with an estimated 1,800 to 2,000 people is a way for us to thank the businesses in Stephenville that have helped supported us throughout the years.

“I have lived in Stephenville all my life and I believe this will be the biggest baseball event ever to be hosted in our city,” Philips said. “Stephenville is a great centralized location because teams from north, south, east and west can all travel here and play teams they normally wouldn’t get to see.”
