Lola Mitchell, 76, of Alexander passed away Friday Aug. 13, 2010 at the Hico Care Center from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease.
Funeral service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Dublin and burial will follow in the Alexander Cemetery near her ancestors, who came to Erath County before 1900.
Visitation is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight at the Harrell Funeral Home.
Mrs. Mitchell was born June 8, 1934 two miles north of Alexander to Janie (Gray) Inabnet and Willis Inabnet. She married Don Mitchell Nov. 6, 1958 in Alexander. She was a life-long resident of the Alexander community where she played both the piano and organ at the Alexander Baptist Church for many years. She served many years as an election judge at Alexander and later at Clairette.
She served 20 plus years as president of the Alexander Cemetery Association. She worked almost 30 years as bookeeper at the cattle auctions in Dublin, Stephenville and Ranger, and she cherished her sale barn friends. She was actively involved in the operation and management of the family’s agricultural enterprises that, over the years, included chickens, hogs, a community feed store, a livestock trucking business, a dairy, a cattle feeding business and the Mitchell Ranch.
Mrs. Mitchell was called Lola Mae by her Alexander School friends, Lola by most of her other friends and family and finally “Meme” after the grandkids came along. Most of the family employees just called her the “Patrona” and they always went to her with their personal problems and she never let them down. She was a superb cook and enjoyed a 40-year tradition of cooking Sunday noon meals for her family and any guest anyone wanted to invite. Every guest was welcome and she made a special effort to see that they had a good time.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, Don; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Joe Mac Riley, of Dublin, and Terri and Bret Greenway, of Alexander. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Amanda and John Fellers, of College Station, Brady Riley, of Dublin, Jarred Greenway and Mitchell Greenway, both of Alexander; and one sister, Wilmoth Caraway, of Stephenville; and many other family members and friends.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Alexander Cemetery Association; 17338 E. State Hwy 6; Dublin, Texas 76446.
