STEPHENVILLE - John E. Burrus, Sr., 85, a horse trainer, died Saturday, December 26, 2009, at a local nursing home.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, December 28, 2009, at the Cowboy Church of Erath County with Rev. Werth Mayes officiating. Burial was at 4 p.m., at Schleicher County Cemetery in Eldorado, Texas. Visitation was held Sunday, December 27, 2009, at Lacy Funeral Home in Stepehnville.

John was born on December 29, 1923, to the late William Jesse and Rosa L. (Stanger) Burrus in Eldorado. He married Gwendolyn Rosa Bain on October 27, 1947, in Uvalde. He was a member of the Cowboy Church of Erath County and a WWII Army Calvary veteran. He was also a member of the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame. John represented the Texas Cowboy in Paris, France, and Florence, Italy, with his voice and guitar, and also had a nursing home ministry doing the same.
Survivors include his wife, Gwendolyn Burrus, of Stephenville; daughter, Gracie Ferguson, and husband, Jerry, of Stephenville; sons, John Edwin Burrus, Jr., of Stephenville, James Claud Burrus and wife, Delise, of Graham, and William Jesse Burrus and wife, Bonnie, of Stephenville; brother, James N. Burrus of Goldthwaite; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
