GORMAN - Layne Fanning, 71, passed away on Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, at his residence.
A memorial service was held on Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, at Bright Funeral Home in Silver City, NM.A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, in Eastside Cemetery in Lingleville.
Layne Fanning was born on Jan. 18, 1937, in Gorman to Ross Fay “Bush” and Alice Elizabeth “Betty” Fanning. He served in the Texas National Guard before being honorably discharged in 1961.
In 1959, he entered the motorcycle business in Mineral Wells. Layne held several Texas State Champion titles in motorcycle racing. In 1970, he and Sadie partnered with Mary K. “Midge” and Larry Lynch to open Foothills Cycles Silver City. They sold and serviced Yamaha and Honda motorcycles until 1991. Their customers were like family; sponsoring local motorcycle racers, making trips to racing events, and Wednesday afternoon trail rides were a source of great joy.
In retirement, he raised ostriches for several years before devoting himself to restoring his beloved antique Farmall tractors. He loved to display the perfected restorations at the Silver City/Grant County Independence Day parade, the Silver City Museum and at the local county fairs. This summer, more than 70 friends and family from seven states attended the celebration of his and Sadie’s 50th wedding anniversary.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Sadie Fay McCarley; son, Ross Fanning and wife Greta of Aiken, SC; daughters, Cynthia Fanning and husband DJ Funderburk of Dallas and Susan Chapman and Husband Tom of McKinney; and grandsons, Mitchell and Logan Fanning and Alexander Chapman.
