A Stephenville man arrested for aggravated sexual assault of a child remained in the Erath County Jail Friday.
Jerome Lemann Smith, 38, was arrested Tuesday and charged with the first-degree felony offense. He is being held on a $500,000 bond, according to Lt. Doug McClammy with the Stephenville Police Department.
The investigation began Aug. 11 when police received a call from a 13-year-old female who reported that she had been sexually assaulted inside the city limits, McClammy said.
"Investigators were able to corroborate the victim's story," he added.
A first-degree felony carries a punishment of 5-99 years in prison.
