Local roper Sterling Smith competes in San Antonio

Sterling Smith, another good old boy from Stephenville, has won round 1, with 7.8 and round 2, with 7.9 in San Antonio. That annual rodeo, one of the top performances in the nation, is in progress. Sterling is also the current average leader on the Texas Circuit with a time of 23.0 on 3.

Sterling graduated Stephenville High School in 2002 earned a bachelor's degree from Tarleton State University. The tie-down roper was born in Arizona in 1983 and was two-time College National Finals Rodeo all-around champion while attending Central Arizona College. He also helped Vernon College win the College National Finals Rodeo team title in 2003 and was named College National Finals Rodeo rookie of the year. His horse, McConnell Star was named AQHA Horse of the Year. In 2007 this cowboy was Resistol Tie-Down Roping Rookie of the Year.
