When a community member spends their life giving to others, their sacrifices and efforts don't go unnoticed. Even in death, that individual leaves behind a legacy.
In a little less than two decades, Lynn Lloyd, former director of the Stephenville Public Library, made such an impact on the city and its residents.
As community members prepare to gather from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Stephenville Funeral Home for a celebration of Lloyd's life, a special group - the Friends of the Stephenville Public Library - are preparing to honor Lloyd as well.
Lloyd, who retired in 2009, died Aug. 2 following a courageous bout with cancer - it was her third battle against the disease. For 18 years, she conducted a children's story hour twice a week. Even after Lloyd ended her career as head librarian, her love of books did not end. Her daughter, Amanda, said her mother continued reading to people at their homes and handing out books across the city until her health would not allow.
To pay homage to Lloyd's dedication, the Friends of the Stephenville Public Library have organized a fundraising effort to benefit area children. The group hopes to bring in an accessible reading and learning area to allow all children to enjoy story time.
Currently, the children's section is located on the lower-level of the library and plays host to weekly events for young learners. The section is not handicap accessible and is difficult for patrons to access.
Mary Meredith, library manager, plans to install an area upstairs that will allow for story time, arts and crafts and more. Meredith said when the project is complete, a plaque honoring Lloyd will be hung in the area.
Meredith said she plans to use memorial donations to purchase tables, chairs, shelving, listening center, puzzles, easels and more.
"In her dedication to the library, Lynn instilled in me an idea that she carried with her wherever she went," Meredith said. "If you teach children to have a love of books, they will be able to do anything they want."
Donations may be made to the Stephenville Pubic Library - Lynn Lloyd Memorial Children's Learning Center, 174 N. Columbia Street, Stephenville, TX 76401. Meredith said all donations should be made payable to the library with the Lloyd memorial clearly noted.
