A lightning strike sparked a brush fire 10 miles south of Stephenville on Highway 281 about 5 p.m. Sunday, and nearby residents were told to be ready for an evacuation.

"The fire burned about 75 acres, 35 of which was very thick brush," said Joe Brown, Erath County Volunteer Fire Rescue assistant chief.

The Texas Forest Service arrived to aid eight Erath and Hamilton volunteer fire departments battling the blaze on foot and truck.

The fire threatened multiple structures, but none were lose, and an evacuation was never ordered.

The fire was contained by 8:45 p.m. and Texas Forest Service arrived early Monday morning to monitor and continue efforts to contain it.
