Two seats on the Stephenville Independent School District (SISD) Board of Trustees will be on the May 10 ballot for local elections.

Place 6, currently held by Dr. Ruth Ann Stephens and Place 7, held by Dr. Joe Gillespie will be up for election.

Stephens has filed for re-election while Gillespie recently announced that he would not seek another term.

According to Superintendent Dr Darrell Floyd, Gillespie decided, following the hiring of his son to the district’s head coaching position, that he would not run to keep his seat. Floyd said he thought Gillespie’s decision was an honorable one and meant to allow Coach Joe the opportunity to do his job without any conflict of interest.

Meanwhile, Mayor Rusty Jergins, who recently announced he would not run for another term with the city, has filed for a shot at Place 6.

“After considering and deciding against running for city council, several people asked me to step up and run for school board. Since my daughter will be starting kindergarten in the fall and since education is so important to me, I decided to give it a shot,” Jergins said.

Today is the last day to file for a place on the ballot. Applications may be obtained at the SISD Central Administration Office, located at 2655 W. Overhill Drive.
