Ty Murray and Jewel will be on national television Monday, competing as the first married couple on “Dancing With the Stars.”
For the past three weeks, the couple, who married last summer, have been practicing in Stephenville (Jewel and partner, Dmitry Chaplin) and in Dublin (Ty and partner Chelsie Hightower).
On Tuesday the two couples, along with family and friends, left for Los Angeles. Ty and Chelsie have been cha-chaing across the hardwood in the 100-year-old Rotary Building in downtown Dublin and on Monday the Rotarians gave them a send-off party.
“This has just been a great place to practice,” Ty told those gathered to say goodbye and wish them luck. “We appreciate the snacks of fruit and Dublin Dr Pepper that you left for us and this building, with its windows and space has just been a great place for us. We haven’t missed a single day here for three weeks and it couldn’t have been a better place to be.”
Chelsie, a professional dancer from Utah who starred on “So You Think You Can Dance?” is a newcomer to “Dancing With the Stars.”
Ty’s mom Joy and dad Butch were present for the farewell party and Joy talked about taking Chelsie to the ranch and putting her on a horse.
“She is just a natural,” Joy said. “You’d have thought she’d been riding always. We just love her and have become great friends.”
The first dance on the show will be a cha-cha and although Ty confided that learning to dance had been really tough, Chelsie said, “I think we are truly ready. We’ve got it down and we’ll do great. The thing that I like about this cowboy is that he goes for the win. Every day he’d come in here, sit down on the floor, take off his boots and start stretching exercises… maybe the same ones he did when he was riding wild bulls. He was getting ready for the competition and that’s great.”
All the Murrays left together for Los Angeles. Butch Murray, wearing his usual black cowboy hat said over his shoulder, “I don’t know about this. I don’t even know if they will let me wear my hat. They said that we couldn’t wear white so I just don’t know. I guess we’ll find out when we get there.”
