A petition is being signed by dozens of Dublin residents following a proposal that will downsize staff at the Dublin Post Office.
According to the Dublin Citizen, an e-mail received from a USPS spokesperson earlier this month stated that "the Postal Service is conducting a study to determine the feasibility of relocating delivery operations now housed at some smaller Post Offices to nearby larger Postal facilities. These changes will not affect mail delivery to our customers."
The e-mail continues on, stating that the move "will result in less overhead and administrative costs, and increased efficiency and productivity."
While the statement concludes with "at this time, no final decisions have been made," local leaders are not convinced that the move is the best choice for their community.
Citizen Publisher Mac McKinnon started the petition circulating at local businesses at the suggestion of a reader.
"We are trying to stop the post office. We are trying to get their attention and let them know that we don't like their proposal," McKinnon said. "There has been a tremendous outpouring against their proposal."
McKinnon said an estimated 1,000 signatures have already been obtained and he plans on mailing the petition next week.
In addition to Congressman John Carter writing a letter on behalf of Dublin residents, concerned citizens are encouraged to write their own letters of objection and mail them to the USPS District Manager at: USPS Fort Worth District, 4600 Mark IV Parkway, Fort Worth, TX 76161-9100.
