A Dublin man was charged with robbery Friday following a vicious attack that left an Erath County man with serious head injuries.

Ruben Vela, Jr., 18, was taken into custody by Erath County Sheriff’s deputies while he was working at the new Holiday Inn Express construction site Friday evening. Sgt. Bob Gonzales said Vela was arrested after the victim identified him in a photo lineup.

The 34-year-old victim was sleeping in a Winnebago parked in the back of his family’s property when he heard a noise about 3 a.m. on Sept. 26.

“The victim felt a sharp pain in his face and was beaten up pretty badly,” Gonzales said. “The victim fought off his attacker and managed to escape the Winnebago, then fled to his family’s home.”

The family woke to the victim’s cries for help and called 911. When the family opened the door, they saw Vela flee the property.

“He (Vela) is a distant relative who lives down the road,” Gonzales said. “The family recognized him before he was able to get away.”

Vela allegedly stole the victim’s wallet and $400 in cash.

This is not Vela’s first brush with the law. He has a prior arrest for allegedly assaulting a Dublin police officer, Gonzales said.

Vela has been charged with robbery, a second-degree felony, and is being held in the Erath County Jail on a $30,000 bond.
