Soccer fans mark your calendars. The Stephenville Hispanic Business Council (HBC) will soon host a full day of action during the annual “Goals for the Future” soccer tournament.

The tourney, set to take place Sunday, March 16, at the Stephenville Soccer Association Complex, will include eight adult men’s teams representing Erath County, Hico, Granbury and Lampasas. Admission is free to the event, which begins at 8:30 a.m. and continues throughout the day until all teams have competed.

Concessions will also be on sale, including hamburgers, hot dogs, breakfast burritos and beverages.

Now in its third year, the HBC “Goals for the Future” tournament hopes to continue to provide scholarships to Erath County’s Hispanic youth who plan to attend Tarleton State University. Thanks to the support of area businesses and individuals, the HBC has been able to present more than $10,000 in scholarships over the last two years.

Frances Looney, HBC chairman, says the tournament is the organization’s biggest fund-raiser of the year, and with the event being moved to March she hopes more spectators will come out to support the teams.

“We had our best year in 2006 because the weather last February was really cold and damp,” said Looney. “We didn’t have as good of a turnout so we’ve moved it in hopes the weather will be better.”

The HBC is also seeking the support of local businesses in the form of sponsorships, said Looney. “We’re trying to get more businesses involved than in the past and hoping to let more and more know about the tournament.”

Business that donate $500 or more will be included on official tournament T-shirts, and Looney says the HBC is seeking a total of eight platinum level sponsors.

Looney also says the HBC is seeking other donations for the tournament concession stand.

“Anybody that wants to donate food items, ice, or anything that we would have to pay for to provide the food, we’d be happy to accept those donations.”

Sponsorship forms and tournament details are available from the Stephenville Chamber of Commerce.
