Neighbors helping neighbors - that’s what makes Erath County a special place to live. And, in a tight-knit community, there is nothing more difficult than finding out one of your own is faced with a battle that will end in a terrible loss.
Such is the case for Stephenville resident Mary Jowers, 48, who just learned last week that she has mere weeks, or months to live. Following four weeks in the hospital, battling double pneumonia, the grandmother of seven and mother of three was sent home with devastating news.
She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which had spread to her lymph nodes, and was already in the final stages.
Jowers, the daughter of N.L and Joyce Green, was raised in Stephenville along with her brothers Leonard and Billy and sisters Nita and Tresia.
For Jowers’ family, the news was difficult, and even harder to take since her mother lost a similar battle just five years ago. Like Jowers, she was diagnosed with a progressive cancer. When she was diagnosed, her terminal bone cancer was in the final stages. Jowers’ sister, Nita, said it was very much the same, a diagnosis that left the family with little time to say goodbye. Joyce was only 67, almost 20 years older than Jowers is now.
The family learned in those last moments that family must come together to make every moment a memory.
Jowers’ work family at Schreiber Foods was crushed by the news and immediately asked what they could do to help help. She had only one request - she wanted to spend every minute with her grandchildren, who range from four to 13-years-old.
Schreiber decided to make that wish come true. The company is sending Jowers and her family on a vacation to San Antonio with a special trip to Sea World.
To help fund the trip and other wishes of the family, Schreiber has organized a benefit garage sale to be held at the cheese plant at 923 CR 176 next Saturday, Nov. 15, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the plant’s front parking lot.
Hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and drinks will be sold from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. In addition, there will be raffle items donated from local businesses and a bake sale to benefit the family.
Chad Martindale, production team advisor at Schreiber, is asking everyone to come and help in the effort. Anyone wanting more information, or businesses wishing to donate raffle items, can call Martindale at 254-552-7739.
