A Hamilton County resident is dead and another is behind bars following an altercation that occurred last week.
Sheriff Greg Bewley said Hamilton County deputies were dispatched to the scene of an assault about 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 21. While en route to the scene, deputies witnessed a vehicle traveling recklessly from the direction of the reported assault.
Bewley said it was later determined the vehicle was transporting the victim, later identified as Hamilton County resident Tommy Allen Craig, to Hamilton General Hospital.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they learned that a fight had occurred involving several individuals. Bewley said several people were injured in the altercation and Craig was stabbed multiple times.
Bewley said deputies interviewed witnesses at the scene who identified, Hamilton County resident Joseph Barton Belyeu, 49, as the suspect in the stabbing.
Craig was taken via air ambulance to Scott and White Hospital in Temple where he later died. .
Belyeu is charged with murder and is being held in the Hamilton County Jail.
Bewley said the investigation into the murder remains ongoing.
