Members of the Bluff Dale Volunteer Fire Department recently celebrated a victory over the Tolar VFD as the two departments faced off at the annual Battle for the Axe.

According to BDVFD Fire Chief George McCormick,  the basketball showdown originally pitted Bluff Dale firefighters against Bluff Dale teachers to determine which team would carry the axe for the year. The teachers eventually hung up their towels.

With the teachers no longer willing to compete, Tolar firefighters rose to the challenge and have squared off against the BDVFD for the last three years.

“Tolar (VFD) joined the games as way to help bring in more money for our local school,” McCormick said.

Tolar took the axe back to Hood County the first two years, but for the first time since the departments have faced off, Bluff Dale brought the trophy (and the glory of the win) back to Erath County.

McCormick said the departments are two tight-knit groups that work together to fight fires in the rural areas of Hood and Erath Counties.

McCormick said he is proud to bring the coveted golden axe back to Erath and was also not ashamed of the 64-53 win over Tolar.
