The show will go on - just not as big as in the past.

That’s the word from city officials responding to residents who were left with the impression that 4th of July activities weren’t going to take place this year, especially in Stephenville City Park.

While the “Family Fun Fair” was dissolved because a sufficient number of volunteers couldn’t be found to plan and run the event, other July 4th activities are planned in the park.

“Although July 4th has been scaled back a little with respect to activities offered, there are still several things going on,” said Drew Wells, director of community services for the city.

First, Wells said, a parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Wisdom Gym on the Tarleton State University campus.

Anyone interested in participating in the parade should contact Traci Riggs at (254) 918-1292, Wells said. Entry forms are also available on the city Web site www.ci.stephenville.tx.us.

Secondly, Wells said, the Cody Gill Band is scheduled to kick off the entertainment beginning at 6 p.m. at the Birdsong Amphitheater.

Then Marty Stuart, a four-time Grammy Awards recipient and owner of six Top 10 hits, along one platinum and five gold albums, will be the featured performer, Wells said.

Fireworks will close the night out, beginning around 10 p.m., he said.

(Texstar Ford is sponsoring the entertainment and the Stephenville Optimist Club is sponsoring the fireworks show.)

Other events, not sponsored by the city, are also scheduled to take place in the park on July 4th.

The annual lawnmower races will take place on the south side of the park, near the Birdsong Amphitheater, Wells said.

Registration for the event will begin immediately following the parade. Practice runs will start at 2 p.m., and the finals will conclude at 5:30 p.m. For more information on the lawnmower races, Wells said, “Wild Will” should be called at (254) 968-0852.

The Christian Classic Cruisers, a new car club in Stephenville, will have a car show in City Park from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Information concerning this event, Wells said, should be directed to Israel Perez, Chapter President at 254-592-3538 or Kalin Elston, Vice President at (254) 592-4336.
