Kelli and Brittany Fortune have a soft spot for animals, particularly horses that are lame or whose owners can no longer take care of them.
Their love of animals prompted the mother/daughter duo to open Hoof Prints Horse Rescue a couple of months ago. The women run the rescue operation from their 10-acre ranch in Huckabay, where they currently care for 12 horses they are trying to find homes for.
Kelli said she has been involved with horses her whole life. Her daughter, she said, inherited her love for all things four-legged.
"Brittany didn't have any choice (in caring for horses)," Kelli said, laughing. "Thank goodness she enjoys them as much as I do."
But caring for the animals is not cheap. Between feed and veterinarian care, the price tag to run the horse rescue is about $300 per day.
To keep Hoof Prints Horse Rescue and other local animal rescue operations going, the Fortune women are hosting a trail ride at Cross Timbers Trails in Dublin on Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 11-12.
The high point winner from both rides in each division will win a pair of Cavallo hoof boots, with other great prizes awarded to 1st-6th place winners.
Participants must register online at www.hoofprintshorserescue.com.
Proceeds from the event will also benefit Never Too Old Horse Rescue, Rainbow Wildlife Rescue and Huts for Mutts.
