After striking a Dublin Police squad car and attempting to flee on foot, Ruben Vela, Jr., 18, spent Thursday night cooling off in the Erath County Jail.

Dublin Corporal Bobby Mendez was off-duty Thursday when he noticed a vehicle driving erratically and nearly striking other cars in a residential area of Dublin. He called dispatch who then sent Officer Richard Hyatt to check it out.

As Hyatt approached the vehicle, occupied by a driver and three passengers, the driver sped away. Hyatt called for backup.

As Officer Greg McKinney responded to the scene, the suspect’s vehicle struck McKinney’s squad car at the intersection of Live Oak and Hawk.

The driver then decided to try to out run the officers and took off on foot.

Officer Chris Cox nabbed the suspect two blocks east of the accident.

Vela is facing a felony charge of evading arrest with a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving and aggravated assault on a public servant.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Vela’s passengers were identified only as three juveniles.
