Texans celebrated Texas Independence Day Wednesday and will celebrate Texas History Month in March.

Stephenville Mayor Nancy Hunter proclaimed the week of Feb. 28- March 5 Texas History Week in Stephenville during a reception Thursday at City Hall.

Daughters of the Republic of Texas and other members of the community attended the reception that featured artwork of the Stephenville Youth Art Program.

Students in the program sponsored by the parks and recreation department drew what they thought best represented Texas and its history.

In her proclamation, Hunter asked citizens to remember why our state was founded and strive to live up to the vision our founders guaranteed its people.

"Reaffirm the ideals that the authors and defenders of Texas Independence had in 1836 by vigilantly protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us, remembering that lost rights may never be regained," Hunter said.

During Stephenville's Texas History Week, civic organizations and classrooms took part in activities to remember the Lone Star State's past.
