Twinkling lights have been shining through the city since Thanksgiving, all in anticipation of Christmas.
Now, Alpha Gamma Rho (AGR) fraternity at Tarleton State University, is asking homeowners, and renters, to put those lights to good use.
The fraternity is sponsoring its eighth annual “Light It Up for Multiple Sclerosis” Holiday Decoration Contest in Stephenville.
Micah Moore, a member of AGR, said the event began to honor a fraternity brother.
“One of our brothers, Chad Mock, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. It started out that year as a fraternity trying to help him with medical expenses,” Moore said.
The event was so successful that the fraternity decided to continue it as an annual project, donating funds to the national Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.
“Essentially, everyone decorates their house for Christmas anyway,” Moore said. “If we see their house decorated, chances are we are going to ask them to participate. All of the money donated through entry fees is given to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.”
The entry fee is $10 per residence and $5 per collegiate residence. Entries must be located within the Stephenville city limits and it is limited to 100 homes and 50 businesses.
The deadline for entry is 5 p.m. Thursday. Entries will be judged from 6-10 p.m. Friday.
The top three homes will win an array of prizes, including a number of gift certificates from retailers and restaurants around town. The grand prize winner will also receive an aid to their bragging rights.
“The top house will have a big banner to put in the front yard," Moore said.
The banner will boast the home is the best decorated house in the city.
