Special to the E-T

Sparing only a couple of minutes to donate blood could save a life. It also is a quick and easy way to give back to the community.

Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Stephenville will host a blood drive from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6. The blood drive will be held in the helipad parking lot across the street from the hospital.

“We are always in need of blood donations to help accident victims and others facing a variety of illnesses across the community,” said Debra Higgins, blood bank lead tech at Texas Health Stephenville. “Residents of Stephenville and the surrounding areas are always generous with our blood drives and we look forward to another successful effort.”

Why donate? Someone in the United States needs blood every two seconds, according to the American Red Cross, but only five percent of the eligible U.S. population gives blood each year. Blood is needed for treating emergencies, cancer, blood disorders, sickle cell anemia and other diseases, according to the Red Cross.

The blood drive will be held with the support of Carter BloodCare.

Anyone in the community who is 17 or older, weighs at least 110 pounds and is in good health is welcome to donate blood. Donors must bring photo identification to participate.
