An unidentified man was killed Friday night in a head on collision on U.S. Highway 377 north.
A Stephenville couple was seriously injured in the accident that occurred shortly before 9 p.m., just past what is known as the “nine-mile bridge,” Erath County Volunteer Fire Rescue Chief Kenneth Howell said.
Walter and Carol Spang, of Stephenville, were apparently headed home when a van, driven by the victim, drifted into their lane and hit them head on. The van caught on fire and the victim was pulled out of the burning vehicle by passers-by who stopped to help, Howell said.
Carol Spang was trapped inside the pickup she and her husband were traveling in. Howell said that others on the scene used a chain to pull the pickup away from the burning wreckage. When medical crews arrived, they used Jaws of Life to free Carol Spang from the pickup. She was transported by CareFlite to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth in critical condition. Walter Spang was transported by ambulance to Harris Methodist Erath County Hospital.
Howell said authorities were having a difficult time identifying the victim because all of his personal belongings were destroyed in the fire. More details surrounding the accident were not available at press time.
