Special to the E-T
The Lone Star Arena is going to be “full” of bull, literally! At least 200 of the best bucking bulls, from 10 different states and more than 80 different stock contractors will unload their best bovine athletes for the April 4 and 5 show.
It’s all a part of this year’s Spring Spectacular PBR Copenhagen Bull Riding Tour. The PBR, in conjunction with the American Bucking Bull, Inc. have developed a competition that allows the owners to pay an entry fee and bring their superstar bulls to be evaluated by a separate panel of judges while being ridden by a talented group of PBR bull riders. More than $175,000 is up for grabs for stock contractors who will be traveling from as far away as California, South Dakota, North Carolina and Arizona.
There is always two athletes competing during every 8 second ride and this year’s list of contestants is a who’s who from the PBR. Cowboys include local favorite Harve Stewart, Canadian Champion Rob Bell, Jason Bennett, Rocky McDonald, Cory Melton, Cody Whitney and PRCA World Champion Matt Austin. These are only a portion of the 80 contestants that will compete during the two-night show. During each performance the top ten contestants with the highest scores will ride in the Championship Round.
This year’s Championship Round will feature some celebrities of its own including the 2007 PBR World Champion Bucking Bull “Chicken on a Chain,” Booger Butt, Redchester, Hot Pistol and more.
“We are extremely excited about this event and especially Chicken on a Chain. This is a superstar bull and he’s coming to Stephenville,” said Randy Schmutz. “To me, having Chicken on a Chain in town is kind of like having George Strait show up. There are a lot of PBR fans right here in Erath county and they’re gonna get to see a great show.”
Chicken on a Chain was selected as one of the top five PBR bulls by the best riders in 2007 and was crowned World Champion at last years Built Ford Tough World Finals in Las Vegas. Chicken on a Chain is owned by Jeff Robinson, Mike Tedesco and comedian, Larry the Cable Guy. When he’s not on the road and bucking off the top bull riders in the world, he’s at home in Ashville, North Carolina. “Chicken’s” record speaks for itself. He’s only been ridden four of 22 times. Earlier this year he was ridden by Renato Nunes for a season high 95.75 point score. Chicken on a Chain will be the feature bull in the Championship rounds on both Friday and Saturday night.
The entire event will be produced by looksWEST Productions, owned and operated by Randy and Amber Schmutz and headquartered in Stephenville. Randy has made his living traveling the country announcing some of the largest PRCA Rodeos and PBR events for the past 20 years, including six appearances at the PBR World Finals.
The excitement kicks off at 10 a.m. Friday with an American Bucking Bull, Inc (ABBI) two year old Futurity competition. Two year old bulls will be shown bucking with a mechanical bull rider for six seconds. The highest scoring bull will win an estimated first place check of almost $12,000. This is a non-ticketed event and open to the public.
Bull Riding action begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday and will feature 40 Professional Bull Riders in the first performance with the top 10 scoring contestants advancing to the Championship Round later that same night.
On Saturday, at 11 a.m. the Spring Spectacular Sale will feature some of the best “buckin” bred genetics in the country including bred cows, pairs, open and bred heifers and yearling bucking bulls
The action will finish up at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, with the final performance with 40 more PBR contestants and another 10-man Championship Round.
