Special to the E-T

Many stock participants stayed at home as shockingly frigid weather greeted the 61st Annual Huckabay Stock Show, which was held on Dec. 5. Despite the setback, the show was a successful practice performance for those planning to continue the season’s competitions.

In the market hogs category, judged by Jason Belew, Katelynn Bulter received the Grand Champion Market Hog award for her hog and took the junior showmanship prize. In the Hampshire category, Dalton Dowell’s project earned champion, and the Reserve Champion Market Hog. In the OPB category, Cade Little’s hog received champion and Michael J. Dowell had the Reserve Champion.

The market lambs and meat goats were judged by David White, assisted by Roy Bills and Jeremie Meador. Scotta and Kenna Faulkenberry scooped up most of the awards in the market lamb category and were the senior and junior showmen. Jadie Hargrove earned the Grand Champion trophy for her goat project.

In the dairy heifers competition, judged by Ricky Traweek, Alison Phillips was honored Grand Champion and junior showman. Senior showman Maggie Weiss took the Reserve Dairy Champion trophy. Brady Dowell earned an honorable mention for his Jersey entry.

In the steer category, also judged by Traweek, Colton Curry was senior showman. Bunker Funderburgh had the Beef Reserve Champion Steer. Huckabay’s little Kailin Dowell earned the Beef Grand Champion Steer prize for her British steer and was the junior showman.

Judges provided suggestions to participants for modifications to their animals, such as appropriate weight limits, muscle tone, posture, and additional technicalities to prepare for the series of competitions culminating at the major Houston Livestock Show that will be held in 2010.
