Joel Espinoza remains hospitalized at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, were he is recovering from four gunshots wounds that left him paralyzed from the waist down, according to his older brother, Jamie Espinoza.
Jamie said Monday that Joel has been moved out of ICU, but is expected to remain in the hospital for several more weeks while he continues physical therapy.
"His legs are numb," Jamie said. "He can't feel anything."
But Joel's spirit, Jaime said, is far from broken.
"He is doing OK," Jaime said. "He is positive and grateful for all the prayers and support he has received."
Joel's life took the unexpected turn on Oct. 23, when he was shot while sitting with a friend inside a car at Stephenville City Park. The suspect, Fernando Esparza, was taken into custody in Amarillo Friday after an anonymous tip led law enforcement officials to a relative's home where Esparza was reportedly hiding out.
He has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony, and is being held in the Erath County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
He said Joel "remembers everything" about the incident and never lost consciousness.
Meanwhile, Espinoza's supporters are stepping up to help.
Jamie said Saint-Gobain Abrasives, where Joel has worked for the past six years, has set up a fund at First Financial Bank for medical expenses. Jaime said other fundraisers are also in the works.
