E-T Staff Report

The Lone Star Arena in Stephenville will once again play host to an exciting two days of PBR bull riding, for the third year in a row.

This weekend, Friday and Saturday nights, will feature 80 PBR bull riders and some of the best bulls from 15 different states. More than 250 bulls, from as far away as Montana and Wyoming and all the way from North and South Carolina, will begin arriving in the “Cowboy Capital of the World” this week. It’s the 2009 Spring Spectacular PBR Discovery Tour presented by Bradberry’s Best in Dublin.

The entire event will be produced by looksWEST Productions, owned and operated by Randy and Amber Schmutz and headquartered right here in Stephenville. Randy has made his living traveling the country announcing some of the largest PRCA rodeos and PBR events for the past 20 years, including eight appearances at the PBR World Finals.

“Last year, the Spring Spectacular was voted Event of the Year by the members of the American Bucking Bull, Inc.”, Randy Schmutz said. “Bucking bull breeders from all over the country love coming to the Cowboy Capital of the World. It’s going to be very exciting!”

Not only are the cowboys riding for big money and the title of “Champion Bull Rider”, the bulls are bucking for bragging rights, too. One Hundred Seventy Eight two-year-old bulls will perform for their share of almost $125,000. Eighty three and four-year-old bulls will be competing for a piece of almost $60,000.

Activities will kick off at 8 a.m. Friday with an ABBI two-year-old Futurity competition. Two-year-old bulls will be shown bucking with a mechanical bull rider for four seconds and evaluated by six judges. Each bull will be given a score to determine the best 20 bulls out of 178 entries. This is a non-ticketed event and open to the public.

Bull Riding action begins Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and will feature 40 professional bull riders in the first performance with the top 10 scoring contestants advancing to the Championship Round later that same night. Some of the PBR superstars scheduled to perform include last year’s Spring Spectacular Champion, Harve Stewart along with Reese Cates, LJ Jenkins, Cord McCoy, Pistol Robinson, Bryan Richardson and Colby Yates. All of these cowboys have qualified for the PBR World Finals in Las Vegas.

On Saturday, things get started with a Cowboy Church service at the Lone Star Arena at 9:30 am. At 11, the Spring Spectacular Female Sale will feature some of the best “buckin’” bred genetics in the country including bred cows, pairs, open and bred heifers. Bring your checkbook and you’ll be able to take home offspring from some of the most widely known bulls in the PBR today.

The action will wrap up at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, for the final performance with 40 more PBR contestants and another 10-man championship round.
