Pink balloons filled the sky over Henderson Junior High School Thursday as students released hundreds of them in remembrance of sisters Cristin and Katie Grubbs.
Cristin, 12, and Katie, 11, are the nieces of Amber and Robert Lemons. The girls lost their lives in a car accident on Nov. 6 near Houston.
On Thursday, students at HJH supported their classmate Reed Lemons, the girls' cousin, by purchasing, then releasing the balloons during a short ceremony held at Lem Brock field.
Proceeds from the event will be donated to Full FX, a gym where the girls took tumbling and cheer lessons, to establish a cheerleading scholarship in their name. Cheerleaders at HJH organized the event.
Amber is a teacher at Gilbert Intermediate, and said the support her family has received from the school district, her students and community is helping them cope with the unimaginable loss.
"We are overwhelmed by your love and support," Amber told the students and faculty.
