The Stephenville Empire-Tribune tied for second place in the Division A “Sweepstakes” category in the 2007 West Texas Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.

“Sweepstakes” awards are presented to newspapers in each division that earn the most points, accumulated from contest categories ranging from advertising to news writing, in the WTPA’s annual competition.

The E-T tied with the Roswell Daily Record for second place in the “Sweepstakes” category, while the Brownwood Bulletin finished first and the Kerrville Daily Times finished third.

E-T News Editor Sara Vanden Berge won a third-place award in the competition for “Journalist of the Year” in the Dailies Division.

In addition, the Empire-Tribune garnered:

A first place in Advertising, A second place in Special Coverage for reporter Angelia Joiner’s coverage of “Roller Coaster Road,” A second place in Special Sections for the E-T’s “2006 Fan & Media Guide” for Stephenville High School, A second place in Feature Writing for Joiner’s article called “Buffalodyssey,” A second place in News Writing for Vanden Berge’s coverage of serial arsonist Robert Stifflemire and her jailhouse interview with alleged “cold case” murderer Joseph Scott Hatley.

“We are very proud of our showing and plan to continue to work even harder in the future, as we strive to meet our community’s needs and become one of the best newspapers in the state of Texas,” E-T Publisher Rochelle Stidham said.
