The driver of a semi truck hauling steel is lucky to be alive after a one-vehicle accident early Thursday morning, authorities said.

“The driver of (the semi) was traveling west on Highway 6 and became fatigued,” Trooper Rosa Lopez with the Texas Department of Public Safety said.

The truck swerved into the opposite lane, headed for disaster.

“He traveled over a culvert and struck a large tree,” Lopez said.

The driver, who is reportedly from the Houston area, was transported to John Peter Smith Hospital by air ambulance.

“He was wearing his seat belt, fortunately, because the cab completely dislodged from the chassis,” Lopez said. “He was very fortunate.”
