Erath County is home to a slew of the country’s top cowboys and cowgirls.
Last weekend, the West Texas Rodeo Association held their 3rd and 4th rodeos of the season in Sweetwater, where several Erath county residents bringing back their share of the pot.
WTRA is an open association where the whole family can compete together with age groups from five to 56 years young and over. Making their debut at the WTRA this weekend were a trio of calf ropers who fared well. Dale Dove took 5th place in the Breakaway roping on Saturday and 2nd place in the Ribbon Roping. Will Parker cracked out the rope can and started back his roping career with a 1st place in Breakaway roping in the 56 and over group, a 5th in the Tiedown Roping and 4th in Breakaway. The Felton family was well represented with Shawn Felton winning the Ribbon Roping, 6th in Breakaway and 3rd in Tiedown. His son Sy was 4th in Ribbon Roping on Saturday and 5th in Tiedown. Dad Shawn came back to win the Open Tiedown with an 8.83!
Trent McDonald, of Dublin, was 5th in the Open roping, 1st in Breakaway and 2nd in Tiedown in the 20-45 age group. Melyssa Elliot, another Dublin resident, was 5th in Breakaway and 5th in Barrel Racing.
The 16-19 age group was well represented for Erath County with Lane Hedeman winning 2nd in Tiedown, and 6th in Ribbon Roping. Cheyenne Harper, who recently moved to Erath, placed 4th in Ribbon Roping.
Jayci Miller won 2nd in Goat Tying and 3rd in Breakaway on Saturday along with placing in every event on Sunday. Tanner Jerrett took home his share of the money with his career best weekend by placing 3rd in Breakaway, 3rd in Tiedown and 3rd in Chute Dogging on Saturday. Morgan Mill resident Trevor Hedeman competed against ropers of every age in the Open Breakaway roping and ended up winning 2nd place

The 2008 WTRA finals aired last week on RFD-TV and featured these and many other Erath county residents who competed in August 2008. Two trailers will be given at the finals to the All Around cowboy and All Around cowgirl from the finals in August 2009.
