wo men are behind bars today in a burglary case that occurred on May 8. A man already in jail for burglary of a building now faces an additional charge of burglarizing a habitation and an accomplice faces similar charges.
Sergio Lopez Puentes, also known as “Tovar,” and Facundo Alvarez Montufar have been charged with the burglary of a residence located in the 1300 block of Kaylock Street. Puentes is suspected of stealing several pieces of jewelry and rifle ammunition, then hiding firearms and power tools in the backyard, which police believe he planned to come back and get later.
But before Puentes had a chance to return to the crime scene, the homeowner discovered the burglary and reported it to police.
Police charged Puentes after investigators discovered that he and Montufar, had taken the stolen jewelry to two pawnshops in Brownwood.
Montufar eluded officers for about a day, but was picked up late Tuesday afternoon just outside of Stephenville.
“We had some detectives out looking for him and they found out where he might be,” said Police Chief Roy Halsell.
Montufar was booked into the Erath County Jail on two warrants, a class c assault charge and a theft ($1500-$20000) charge.
Halsell said most of the stolen goods have been recovered.
