A longtime police officer has been hired to become the Stephenville Independent School District’s second school resource officer.

Officer Benny Payne will begin his new role next week and will be on school campuses when school begins Wednesday.

“Officer Payne is going to make a fantastic SRO for the community and the school district,” Police Chief Jason King said.

Payne has worked as a patrol officer for the Stephenville Police Department since 2007.

Prior to that he worked for the Dublin Police Department for 10 years.

SISD made the decision to hire a second SRO as part of its efforts to bolster school security.

They are also in the process of obtaining a K-9 officer that is trained to alert on weapons and narcotics.

Officer Payne said he is excited about his new role and looking forward to working with the school district.

“This is a great career change for me,” Payne said. “I am excited and ready to assist the schools in any way possible.”
