Erath County Sheriff Matt Coates has announced more changes to his department with the promotion of two longtime employees.

Cody Keith was promoted to chief deputy on Monday following the retirement of Heath Crossland.

“Cody is very personable, level-headed and efficient,” Coates said. “He is knowledgable about his job and knows the community well since he was born and raised here.”

As chief deputy, Keith will oversee the front office, dispatch and jail.

Keith began his career in 2003 while working in the Hamilton County Jail. In 2005 he became a deputy, then transferred to Erath County in 2009.

This is the second big promotion for Keith in a matter of months.

In March he was promoted to captain following the departure of Jesse Metcalf.

Sgt. Jeremy Woodruff will now fill the role of captain.

“Jeremy is a very good administrator and when I took office he had his hand in just about everything,” Coates said. “He is very good at his job.”

As captain, Woodruff will oversee patrol and CID.
