Henderson Junior High student Mia McCray was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) last August and now, the Stephenville High School Fellowship of Christian Athletes is doing their part to help Mia and her family through the ordeal.

Miles for Mia 5K and one-mile fun run is a benefit run that will take place at 8:30 a.m. — registration opens from 7:15-8:15 a.m. — Saturday, May 26, at Stephenville City Park.

“It’s just a wonderful opportunity to have a servant's heart just to reach out and help the community and that’s something we really strived for this year with FCA,” said FCA president and SHS junior Chase Wakefield. “It’s really humbling and an honor to be able to do this. I want to be a pastor and so to be able to do this at the high school level is amazing.”

The 5K is $30 and the fun run is $25, and registration can be done at the high school or online at racedayeventservices.com. Donations are also welcome.

The school is also selling T-shirts for $15 ($2 extra for sizes XXL/XXXL) that say “Miles for Mia” and those can be purchased at the high school. Those who sign up for the race will get a T-shirt.

“For us it’s just about serving others and if we can help this family defray some of the medical costs, travel, food, lodging and just life, that’s what we’re called to to,” said SHS FCA advisor, teacher and coach Kristi Mayes. “And hopefully others will have the same heart.”
