Shay (Gracy) Douglas will officially start her new position as the Stephenville High School Honeybees head volleyball coach and teacher this summer after the SISD board of trustees approved her contract during tonight’s closed session.
Douglas was approved for a one-year contract and was one of six candidates considered for the position.
Current SHS head volleyball coach Fran Metzgar announced she would be retiring this year after a long and distinguished career with 646 wins. She started at SHS in 1995.
Douglas graduated from SHS and Tarleton State University, and is a member of the SHS Athletic Hall of Fame. She earned all-state honors in volleyball from the Texas Girls Coaches Association and the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. She was also named as an all-state basketball player by the TABC in addition to her academic all-state status in volleyball.
“It’s always been a big dream of mine,” Douglas said in a previous interview with the E-T. “I’ve always kept my eye on Stephenville. It had a big impact on my life. It’s kind of a dream come true. I’m kind of in awe that I get to come home and do what I love.”
Douglas is continuing in her current position as a teacher and coach at Class 4A Giddings, where she is a girls track and field assistant coach.
In eight seasons as a high school volleyball coach, Douglas has had five playoff teams.
