With Election Day less than a week away, voters are taking full advantage of early voting after a slow start due to bad weather.
Erath County Clerk Gwinda Jones said 1,583 voters had cast early ballots at the Erath County Courthouse and 137 at the Dublin Annex as of 10 a.m. Wednesday.
“People are getting out to vote despite the bad weather,” Jones said.
Three big local races are driving voters to the polls. For the first time in more than two decades voters will choose a new county judge and county treasurer following the retirement of Tab Thompson and Donna Kelly.
Voters will also weigh in on a contentious race for Erath County sheriff between current sheriff Matt Coates, who was appointed to the position in December 2016 following the unexpected death of Sheriff Tommy Bryant, Bobby Harpole, Clell Murray and Paul Tyus.
