Stephenville will soon have a new mayor.
When the filing deadline to run in the city elections ended Friday, Doug Svien was the only candidate to run for mayor.
The city’s current mayor, Kenny Weldon, announced weeks ago that he would not seek re-election.
On Monday, the E-T spoke with Svien about his upcoming role.
“I’m looking forward to working as a team to take care of the city’s longterm needs,” he said. “We will take things year by year.”
Svien went on to praise Weldon’s leadership during the past several years.
“Kenny is an outstanding leader and brought vision to longterm planning,” he said. “I’m sorry to see him go. I think the world of him.”
Svien currently represents place 3 on the city council. After he becomes mayor the council will decide to either appoint a replacement for the remainder of his term or let voters decide in a future election.
Last minute filings
Just before 5 p.m. Friday, Justin Allison and Russ McDanel entered the race for city council.
Allison filed to run for place 6, which is currently held by Alan Nix, who is seeking another term.
The E-T has not been able to reach Allison for comment on his candidacy.
McDanel is running for place 8, currently held by Jerry Warren who is not seeking re-election.
He will run against Brandon Huckabee.
McDanel served on the city council from 2008-2016 and says he has learned from his loss.
“The results of the 2016 council election were very humbling to me,” McDanel said Monday. “Learning from mistakes is important and I heard the voters loud and clear regarding spending on plans and consultants. I feel the time is right for me to step up, debate the issues, listen to the people and help keep the council fiscally conservative.”
Here is a look at how the rest of the city council and school board filings shook out:
City Council Place 2
