1. What are the duties of county commissioner?
County commissioners are responsible for the construction/building of roads and bridges in a precinct. County Commissioners abide by the county’s set tax rate and budget, approve budget purchases of the county, fill vacancies for certain elected and appointed offices, set salaries, expenses and benefits, and have the authorization to issue bonds and project contracts. They also are required to perform a variety of administrative tasks.
2. What are the most pressing challenges currently facing Erath County?
Drug and alcohol abuse are what I feel challenges the county the most. This may not seem like an answer for the county commissioner, but with about half of the population in the county jail for DUI, DWI, possession or manufacture of a controlled substance, it is most definitely a large issue. This doesn't include theft from some of the inmates to help feed their addiction.
3. You are faced with a need to cut expenses. What adjustments do you feel could make the greatest difference (cost savings) for the county?
The county’s budget is far from a simple matter. One of the first things that could be done is to repair and maintain the current inventory of equipment instead of buying new machines.
4. How do you feel about the current condition of roads and bridges within your precinct?
There are over 200 miles of county roads in precinct 4 requiring attention. They have pot holes, culverts that have been left full of dirt and broken or missing guard rails. Ditches are so steep that running off the road is a danger to both vehicle and driver. There are also long stretches of road where more water runs down the middle of the road than in the ditches. Many Erath County citizens could list other things needing to be corrected with these roads.
5. What makes you the best candidate?
I recognize that elected officials work for their constituents. Too many seem to forget that until Election Day. I realize that the money the county spends isn't just numbers on a balance sheet, this money is all too often a burden to acquire, to give away only to rarely see the work it is supposed to accomplish. I plan to repair and maintain roads to the best of the county’s ability, and to honor the budget we have to work with.
