One of the state’s most colorful sportscasters will be the guest speaker at the annual Dublin Chamber of Commerce Banquet taking place at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, embellishing the idea of “never, ever give up.”

Eddy Clinton was twice named Texas Sportscaster of the Year, but is most widely recognized as the broadcast voice of the infamous gridiron dual between John Tyler High School and Plano East High School at Texas Stadium -- called by many “the greatest high school football game of all time.”

Not only was the game famous, but the play-by-play broadcast by Clinton and his fellow announcer was, too. In fact, that broadcast brought national fame to the duo who won an ESPY Award from ESPN in the Showstopper of the Year category, and an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. It also earned them principal roles in Varsity Blues with Jon Voight.

Clinton, who has presented more than 500 motivational speeches, also founded and owns National Athletic Marketing Association which has successfully marketed and placed more than 300 athletes to colleges and universities across the United States with athletic scholarships.

He is recognizable by his many appearances in commercials for Southwest Airlines, Cabela’s, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospitals and AT&T.

The chamber banquet will begin with social time and a silent auction, followed by dinner and the awards banquet at 7 p.m. in the Dublin Intermediate School, 609 Thomas St.

The theme for this year’s event is “Saluting Team Dublin USA,” which stresses the importance of the relationship of local entities to each other such as school, businesses, civic clubs, city government and the chamber of commerce, which working together has created “Dublin, Texas USA."

Among the awards to be presented this year are three Dublin Character Trait honors, Citizen of the Year, Business Leader of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Billie Kloster Ambassador, Faith in the Future, Spotlight on Excellence, Lifetime Achievement Award and the Outstanding Chamber Director. The chamber’s new officers and directors will also be introduced.

“I enjoy seeing everyone that loves this community and respects each other as friends of commerce come together for a wonderful Dublin event,” said Chamber Executive Director Luanne Schexnider. “I’m excited to see the decorated tables and to be motivated by our speaker Eddy Clinton and honor the awards recipients.”

Tickets going fast and reservations are encouraged since the banquet is expected to be a sell-out. Ticket price for chamber members is $20 each and for non-members is $25.

Tables decorated with the banquet theme will be in competition for Dublin Dollars, as determined by mystery judges.
